What is Hip Hop? The New Age expression of black (ghetto) culture. Containing all elements of artistic expression. Over the years as the culture gained worldwide popularity through the media, the essence has been overshadowed. The culture has been through various stages of existence and still growing. Most fans are unaware of the Golden Age of Hip Hop. This time was strong and we had control of our expression. Creatively and politicly it became an agent of exposure and to some if became an agent of escape. Like other cultures Hip Hp has many aspects (knowledge, wealth etc...) but the wealth factor has been taken to the extreme. The 1970's basically represent birth and formation. The elements were established and the body of Hip Hop ready to take stage in the world. the 1980's made noize opening the doors connecting ghetto life with the world. This is labeled the Golden age. During this decade many have been inspired to creatively expand all horizons artisticly and politically.

The 1990's is the foundation age as this is the time when real street entrepreneurship entered the culture on a grand scale. Although lacking the skill level of the Golden age the foundation age brought success financially bring ghetto business to the corporate level. people like puffy and master P although not our most talented in the arts, still support and are a part of Hip Hop culture. Up until now we have seen Hip Hop exceed the barriers set by the establishment to restrict it. (a problem rarely addressed by MC's and others) Most people are unaware of the earlier struggles of during the formation and Golden age. In my opinion "rap is only acceptable to the Media giants when it is not pure and intellectual""Rap is only entertainment and nothing deeper" This is what they want us to accept. They? Who are They? The record companies and media giants that promote rap music in there view and likings. Putting what they want it to be at the forefront representing our image. Rap is a success, Hip Hop is still misunderstood. During the golden age a rapper couldn't think of going on stage alone and talking only about bling bling and sing sing. The audience would get on the stage and fling fling him off the stage. Mc's such as Krs One and Rakim etc... are replaced because they are two focused and intelligent.

Too much leadership. Most say that it is what the people want to here and there's nothing to it. But most also dont realize the record labels control whats in or out of style not the people. The people will adapt blindly to what is popular. It happens everywhere. If they wanted Hip Hop to have a positive outcome or image it would. That is not there intention. "Kill two birds with one stone by profiting of another suicidal path" thats there code. Believe it or not. Do you remember the "Planet rock" song. To me it represented the early formation age when claimed to take over the world. And it has expanded since so "Planet rock" did its job. Now is the new millenium. Hip Hop must come home to its core. We must take back control of our image, our music and our culture. During this stage we must accept the many aspects of Hip Hop culture and embrace it. (all of it) A re-birth and Re-formation stage is needed. All lessons of the 3 previous stages combined. Then Hip Hop can wake up the sleeping giant within us all.
These are insights I have gained through my experience in Hip Hop culture.
